Making Waves is looking for poets to perform at its very first festival slam! 

Making Waves was created through the Margate Bookie Young Producers Programme. During Lockdown 2020, Carly Maling, Crow Rudd, Pernela Chea and Louise Devismes got together to work on a series of three events for the Margate Bookie Literary Festival. 

Made by young creatives, for young creatives - Making Waves was created to help out early career artists during the pandemic but due to the first events overwhelming success, Making Waves has been allowed to continue on!

Now led by Carly Maling & Crow Rudd, Making Waves has expanded into its own yearly weekend festival that's set to take place at the HEART Centre in Leeds on the 9th - 11th September 2022. Wiith the festival slam happening on the 9th September from 6pm - 8pm.


Applications to take part should be sent to with the following information:

  • Professional biography, no more than 50 words, including the name you would like to be known as and your pronouns.

  • A headshot to be used in marketing material

  • Links to previous performances (online preferred)

  • If you have applied to the exhibition open call and are successful, you slam application will NOT be taken into account. 

  • Entrants will be competing in single elimination rounds and will be requested to perform one poem of 3 minutes or less per round.

  • Selected performers will be invited to take part in the slam via email, where you will then find out all the further information you need!

Applications will close on the 30th July 2022 and you will be contacted within two weeks of that date.
